Dental crowns can be used to strengthen a tooth that is cracked, weakened, or severely decayed. Often, a crown is used to restore a tooth following a root canal. Crowns can also replace single missing teeth in conjunction with a dental implant. Dr. Robert Rebert, Jr. places custom dental crowns at his Metairie, LA, office. He uses high-quality materials, such as porcelain and zirconia, to craft durable, natural-looking crowns. To learn more, please contact us today.
Why Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns serve a range of cosmetic and restorative purposes. They can:
- Support a tooth that has weakened due to wear, fractures, or extensive decay. In these cases, a filling may not be sufficient for restoring the tooth. With the placement of a dental crown, we can restore dental function and prevent further damage.
- Strengthen a tooth after root canal therapy. A root canal involves the removal of a significant amount of dental tissue, and can weaken the tooth. A crown can provide support and restore the appearance of the tooth.
- Mask stains and improve the appearance of misshapen teeth. Because a dental crown completely encases a tooth, it can mask cosmetic imperfections and improve the appearance of your smile.
- Replace a single missing tooth. If you are missing a tooth, we can place a dental implant to replace the tooth root, and restore the implant with a custom crown.
During an in-depth consultation, Dr. Rebert can examine your smile, identify your needs, and determine if a dental crown or other restoration is the best solution for restoring comfort, balance, and aesthetics to your smile.
Our crowns are custom crafted at an outstanding dental laboratory to give patients a natural-looking restoration providing improved function and comfort.
The Dental Crown Procedure
The dental crown treatment process requires at least two visits to the dentist's office. During your first appointment, Dr. Rebert will remove all decayed tissue from the tooth. Next, the tooth will be shaped to create room for the restoration. Once the tooth has been prepared, we will take an impression, and provide a temporary crown.
After your appointment, Dr. Rebert will send your dental impressions to a dental lab. Technicians will craft your custom crown out of porcelain, zirconia, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or e.max® porcelain materials. In general, it takes about two weeks for the lab to create a custom crown.
During your second appointment, Dr. Rebert will remove the temporary crown and check the fit and appearance of the custom crown. After cementing the crown into place, he will make any refinements necessary to maintain your proper bite alignment.
With dedicated at-home care and regular checkups, you can expect your dental crown to last for many years. Be sure to brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, and attend dental exams and cleanings every six months.
